The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan

Fans of Percy Jackson will like this one. Riordan brings together three disturbed young people: Jason, who doesn't seem to remember anything about himself; Piper, a confused trouble-maker, her father a famous Cherokee movie star and who is certain Jason is her boyfriend; and Leo, who seems mechanically gifted and sees images of "dead people." The three end up at Camp Half-Blood midst rumors of the fulfillment of the Great Prophecy. Teaming up, unsure of their destination, they only know that they follow their instincts. Great adventure and fantasy story. Another great beginning to a series. Sandy Penton.

Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse

Billie Jo is fourteen and loves to play the piano. It is dry out. It has been dry for three years. The ground is nothing but dust, blowing everywhere, covering everything, in their food, their mouths, no place is free. Yet her farmer father still hopes for rain for his wheat crop; her mother, pregnant, questions her husband's decision but stands by him. Then there is a terrible accident. Billie Jo's mother is dead. Her father is numb. Her wounded hands are unable to play the music that might comfort her.

The moving prose of Hesse strikes the heart of the reader, painting a vivid picture of a young girl's life during this period, a novel of forgiveness. A must read, based on factual information. Sandy Penton.

Japan: It's Not All Raw Fish by Do Maloney

Journalist Don Maloney shares his experiences living and working with the Japanese on their home turf. Informative, highly entertaining, best advice is to "go with the flow" and enjoy the adventure. Even though this was published over 20 years ago, Japan hasn't changed all that much and the reader will appreciate Maloney's dry wit and his observations. Sandy Penton.

Paradise Valley by Dale Cramer

Cramer illustrates the problems of the Amish in Ohio in the 1920's. Caleb Bender takes matters into his own hands, moving his family to Paradise Valley, Mexico after being jailed in Ohio after refusing to send his school age children to public school. Homesteading in a remote mountain valley, dealing with bandits and an unfamiliar language, the Bender family "pioneers" the land, starting from scratch, digging a well, making adobe bricks for their buildings, and preparing the land for their crops.

His daughters, Emma, Rachel and Miriam find they are stronger than they had ever thought, as well as learning they have unexpected gifts and talents. The whole family learns what it means to really put their trust in God by living their faith day by day. A truly inspiring message in this book, fiction based on actual events that happened. Anxious for book two. Sandy Penton.
