Thirteen-year old Katie is facing a summer full of conflict. Her dad wants her to be a baby-sitter for a couple who have three very imaginative boys and to help care-take an elderly couple who just need someone there when the husband needs to leave the house. Her family has moved a lot and she misses a girl-friend from her former city of residence as well as feeling pretty much like a "loser." Katie's step-mom is as supportive as she can be of Katie and agrees that her dad can be pretty strict but that he loves Katie very much. This is a novel of a teenager growing up, finding out who her friends really are, and coming to terms with unexpected consequences. Berg writes a tale of a girl who is wise beyond her years and who learns the importance of forgiveness.
A good read. Sandy Penton

Percy Jackson & the Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan
Seventh-grader Percy Jackson has had quite a year. It was exciting finding out his father is Poseidon making him a half-blood, spending summer camp with other half-bloods and mythical creatures, now he is disappointed that he won't be allowed to go to summer camp this year. His summer starts like this: he is dreaming about Grover, the satyr running for his life on the streets of Florida. How can he help Grover? Does he really have a half-brother? What is Clarisse's search for? Lots of excitement and adventure in this, the second in the series. This reader likes the story line and action. Sandy Penton

Lately, events have been happening that seem impossible. His quirky friend Grover is sticking by his side but Percy loses him after the bus is destroyed. His love of Greek mythology seems to mean more and more to him every day as stranger and stranger things keep happening. Snake Dreams: A Charlie Moon Mystery by James D Doss
Charlie Moon, retired from the police department, is still in the thick of things when Officer Scott Parris calls on him to discuss a murder. Aunt Daisy adds to the confusion when she tries to do a little detecting on her own. One critic compared the writing to author Tony Hillerman but in this readers opinion Doss is way out there with this convoluted tale, taking the long way around to tell a story, and when it is over, I'm still not sure who did the dirty deed.
